Therapeutic Dry Needling [TDN] – Dry needling involves the use of thin filament needles in a targeted area to release tight muscles, increase blood flow, and stimulate the body’s self-repair and cause a reduction in pain.
TDN works at the muscular and sensory nerve levels. Muscularly, the thin, filament needles cause a reflexive relaxation of a tight or spasmed muscle. At a sensory nerve level, the needles target specific sensory nerves to desensitize these nerves allowing the surrounding muscles to relax.
Is TDN Painful? Like other hands-on treatment modalities such as massage and trigger point release, a small amount of discomfort is associated with TDN. The filament needle is smaller than a hypodermic needle used to give a shot or draw blood (you could fit ten thin filament needles at the end of a hypodermic needle.)
